I can totally understand why a lot of people here aren't though! You've grown attached to these characters, followed their journey from the beginning and now it's all falling apart because of the people making the show, I get why so many people are upset, after being so involved in the show.
But on the other end, there's people like me that are kind of new to the show that really struggle to get pulled into it. I'm a fan of the comics, been reading them for about 7 years, and whilst I loved it to begin with, I thought it got quite stale after a while because of Rick. I'm bored of Rick. Rick seems so infallible and invincible, and after almost a decade of seeing him get into the same sort of situations over and over again... and Kirkman saying he could die at any moment (yeah, right) I just want him gone.
I never get bored of Negan, though! So I jumped into the show after his introduction and liked every scene he was in, and hated everything else. Going by what everyone is saying, I dived into the pool when it was the most contaminated and should have started from the beginning... but I've heard a lot of bad stuff about the show as a whole, with its crap pacing, boring moments, characters like Tara (oh god no) and it following the plot of the comics, although quite badly.
I think the show is a disaster and most people seem to agree, and it's particularly hard for someone like me to get involved, when I instantly don't care about the characters because the direction of the show is so insufferable. The fact that the more silly elements like kung-fu Jesus, Eugine's stupid way of talking and Ezekiel look dorky as all hell when adapted to the live screen don't help.
And although I said I'm bored of Rick in the comics, I completely dislike him in the show. He's just such a knob at times, yet nobody calls him out on it. Everything is so two dimensional. I saw people hated the Carl actor but were so upset when he got killed off.
So with the news that someone everyone seems to celebrate (Angela Kang) is taking over the show, Rick is finally getting offed, and it's going to feel like a new show... I'm SO excited.
I thought Carl dying was a bold move (all the controversy about the actors and all that aside) and I was surprised that I almost cried during his last moments, considering the show is a shit show. I'm VERY excited that the superman Rick is coming to an end and what that will entail going forwards.
I guess I just don't really believe that Rick and Carl 'make' the Walking Dead and it'll be so much worse off without them. Again, I have my bias because I haven't been involved since the first season, and it has been a story about a man trying to protect his family. But I'm confident it can move away from that pretty comfortably.
It just seemed too 'safe' or stale to have it that way for good, and I never liked the Walking Dead for how safe it or the characters are. I've seen a few people saying it should end in that case, but I don't really follow there, either. The Walking Dead video games were better than anything the comic has done, and the show too, I'm sure. There's potential without certain characters and themes in this show, and I'm looking forward to this new direction. I'm hoping for the things I liked (zombies, tension, danger, proper survival) and less of what I don't (over the top action, badass characters unafraid of the zombies and kicking the shit out of them, dumb characters like Tara, horrible pacing).
I don't really believe the show is dead without Carl or Rick, or following the plot of the comics... not if this Angela Kang is all she's cracked up to be. There's so much potential in this post apocalyptic stage to play around with... I mean it can't get worse after the last few seasons, right?
But also, I think it's a good thing to have a fresh start after it being so bad. It gives people like me an opportunity to get involved and try and care about where things are going now.
But then again, my optimism might be misplaced considering how bad they screw everything else up?
P.S: nobody finds it weird that Scientology hates homosexual people, and yet a scientologist is playing a lesbian??
