Ok so Maester Aemon bit the dust and Castle Black really needs a new Maester. Jon's plan is to send Sam to the Citadel for training which would take many years to come to fruition. That's fine, but what are they supposed to do in the meantime? Could he just send a raven to the Citadel explaining the situation and ask them for a new Maester?
The kind of people who would become a Maester in the first place would be much more willing to join the Night's Watch than other men. I'm sure they could find a volunteer.
