Chekhov's Gun is, according to Wikipedia, a dramatic principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed; elements should not appear to make "false promises" by never coming into play. Anton Chekhov himself has written, "Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there."
A few weeks ago, back in episode 5, Otto gave Nick the revolver that Russ used to kill himself after his wife turned. They made just enough of a big deal about it at the time that I said to myself, "Heh, Chekhov's Gun right there." During Strand's conversation with stranded cosmonaut Vaschenko on the Abigail, they began exchanging famous last words, the first example being, "I haven't had champagne for a long time," by none other than Mr. Anton Chekhov himself.
