Plenty of examples of things never being explained in-show, just off the top of my head:
- The true reason Walt left Grey Matter
- Walt's relationship with Gretchen and why it ended
- Why Walt ended up falling from a prestigious job as a lab researcher to a broke chemistry teacher
- Walt's relationship with his parents
- Why Hank and Marie are childless despite Marie's fondness for kids
- Gus' background in Chile and why he was so feared
I'm sure there are tons of others. We get, at best, brief hints in the show but the matter is never directly addressed, at least not in the actual show's universe. I'm wondering how you all feel about this. Personally, I can see how leaving some things to mystery can have some allure, but at the same time I feel like having that backstory can add huge, massive amounts of dimensions to the characters. We know from Vince, for example, that Walt left Gretchen (and Grey Matter) completely because of his insecurity about her rich family, which kind of fits in perfectly with that whole massive ego and entitlement thing he has going on
