If there were a setting that could lose its main character, its the Zombie Apocalypse setting.

I do think that if there were a setting that could lose its main character and keep trucking along, its a Zombie Apocalypse setting. Mainly because throughout Zombie movie lore, everyone usually ends up dying and its always a bleak ending. I mean, a lot of folks watch this show for the horror aspects anyway. Horror fans are drawn to it because of the Zombies and blood and gore. Yeah, the characters are cool and all, and yeah, some fans get attached to characters, but there is always room for more cool characters. Besides that, its a horror setting. People usually die in horror settings - Even important characters and sometimes even main characters. I know that gets away from the Comic in this instance, but that brings me to my next thoughts below...........................

On the bright side, perhaps Rick leaving means that they can 100% get away from the Comic story-lines and do completely new and refreshing stuff that doesn't need to follow a Comic guideline (even though they did follow the Comic loosely at times and not always 100% by the book) - So perhaps without the pressure of following the Comic, the show can get some breath of fresh air incorporated into it.

By the way, for those saying maybe season 9 should the end, I disagree. They've already started filming the season based on the Facebook feed of a cousin who lives in Atlanta, and there's no way to give the show a proper ending on such short notice. Besides, despite the decline, the ratings are still the best on cable TV. There's no real reason to pull the plug at the moment.
