I used to completely blame Walt for the breakdown of the setup with Gus. His paranoia and ego ruined what could have been such a lucrative set up for everyone. I would get upset just watching the end of season 4 cause of how dense Walt was acting. But during a recent rewatch of the series, I realize Gus could’ve managed the situation easier from the start. The same way he gave Jessie meaning through pairing him with Mike, he could’ve managed Walt by assuaging his concerns, preventing him from going full paranoia. In management theory terms, he needed to understand that what motivated Walt more than money was pride and ego, then made sure this was fostered. “Walt, this is Gayle, he will be taking over for you when you pass away or retire” something like that would have gone a long way. His refusal to even see Walt was a huge part of the breakdown
This is my third time watching the series and this thought just hit me. This show’s characters are so complex I see something new each time I watch it, and that’s why I love it. This thought is probably well established elsewhere but I just got to it this time around.
