Unpopular Opinion- I’m glad Rick left.

Before the downvotes start, I loved Rick and I love Andrew Lincoln.

However, I feel like the presence of Rick was harming the show big time. A show that has so many characters that survive for such a long time can struggle when it has a main character.

Take for example Father Gabriel. In the comics, he survives a really long time, but he doesn’t really do anything. In the show, it’d be unfair to cast Seth Gilliam and keep him around for 5 seasons only to show up in some background shots. Each (semi major) character needs to get screen time, and when the show and its audience feels it needs to fill its “Rick-quota” every season, the show suffers.

Season 7 tried this, with Rick being absent from a handful of episodes. The audience reacted very poorly and it became apparent that people wanted to see Rick and he was always gonna be the main character.

Once Rick left, it opened up plenty of time for newer characters to be developed and the show has new life breathed into it. (Yes, I understand Rick left when a new showrunner took over but, while Kang is doing much better than Gimple, I think Rick’s absence was still a factor.)

If Rick was still around, I’m confident in saying that characters like Ezekiel and Connie, who have become great characters, would not have been developed nearly as much.

I understand that Daryl is arguably the new “main character,” but he isn’t really the group leader as much as he is a familiar face for everyone who is involved in a lot. If Daryl was absent from 3 episodes in a row, it wouldn’t feel really weird and people wouldn’t react as strongly as they did when Rick was absent.
