>!Did anyone else feel that the plane crash felt a little strange during the season 2 finale & beginning of season 3? The show did a really good job building up to it with the black & white flash-forwards, & the characters developing up to it, but in context of the rest of the show, it feels out of place.
I get that the plane crash was supposed to be a giant catastrophe that came to be from Walt’s selfishness, but it seems a little outlandish and is frequently forgotten about. In a show where the most memorable moments are vehicular manslaughter, cartel gunfights, & a small explosion killing the main villain, two planes crashing into each other seems a little ungrounded.
It also stands out as a somewhat forgotten arch. I like it when shows call back to previous stories in the show because it feels a lot more cohesive as a story. Breaking bad doesn’t really do that with the plane crash the way they do with Tuco, Combo, & even the pants. The only references to the plane crash are only indirect. I don’t think they ever mention the actual event outside of Walt hearing on the radio that Jane’s dad shot himself, & Saul wearing the ribbon every once in a while. It’s mostly indirect references like with the eyeball & Jane. But those mostly serve as reminders to Walt about letting Jane die, & to mad Jesse feel remorse. It’s not really about the plane. They never bring it up, because it doesn’t feel like something that would happen in this universe.
It’s an interesting plot point with major character ramifications, but the actual event that the entire season built to is never really mentioned again after season 3. Which is even more strange, because seasons 3, 4, & 5 take place very close to each other. It’s great that there were small references, but that’s just that. Small!<
