The use of killing walkers through fences, or lack thereof

I'm currently on my first watch and I'm on ep 3x15, I'd like to address something that's been massively bugging me throughout the entirety of the 3rd season, the prison section. All of the people in the group possess knives, why the hell do they not actively use the tactic of "lure into fence by sound and stab" to clean up the prison entrance? We've seen them do it a couple of times, so they know how to do it, why do they not do this to clean up the entirety of the yard and instead choose to just hole up inside the inner fence, leaving the grass between the outer fence and the inner fence crawling with walkers? It's literally gonna take several minutes to get all of them and have that area to themselves for whatever. Sure, they may not have a use for it at the moment, but you have an area that is fenced and you still allow walkers to be inside of it, even though that's your entrance point and it's gonna take 10 minutes to clean it up.

Excuse my ramble, it may ultimately not be that big of a deal but I literally see no reason to not just take care of them, it's not like they never use that area, and as said, it's already fenced. That tactic could potentially be used to even kill the walkers that are outside of the fence and the whole prison, they keep on coming but it's not like they're infinite, there may be 15-20 walkers on the entrance everytime we see it, why not clean up just to be a little more secure, even for a small amount of time?
