Andrea (Show) Discussion

Please don’t feel forced to read, I know it’s long ahah! Just a quick rant :)

I’ve been watching the show for years now and Andrea had always been an OG favourite of mine. She’s made some pretty... questionable decisions which make me understand why some people may not love her, and I can absolutely agree that her comic counterpart is a better character than her show counterpart. but I really don’t think she deserves as much hate as she gets, at all.

A main reason for people hating her is shooting Daryl, but I mean... come on? Is that really something hate-worthy? She saw him, muddy and bloody with ears as a necklace walking like a Walker. Although she was told not to shoot, she didn’t want to take any risks, and so she shoots what she believes is a Walker to protect the group. She had good intentions in doing this, And if Daryl can forgive her why can’t viewers?

Another thing she does to earn some dislike is her attitude towards Dale after 1x06. I wish she had been a bit more understanding at first too, but her feelings were justified. She had just watched several people die horrible deaths, including her own sister. She felt she had nothing to live for, and Dale took that away by forcing her hand. She’s bound to be angry about that; she clearly didn’t feel up to fighting anymore, and didn’t want to be a burden on the group by not wanting to live, but Dale took that away from her. Eventually she does forgive him, and they become very close again, but I really think her feelings were justified, although she was a bit too harsh.

Now, the Governor thing.. yeah, not her best moment. But look at it from her shoes, she had been out for 8 months, barely surviving, and all of a sudden she finds this safe-haven. A chance to live, not just survive ( after overcoming her past feelings of suicide, she was obviously going to fall in love with the place. ) a man, with no reason to at all, takes her in and offers care and safety, and in the world she lives in that’s not often offered to you. The people there, including Merle who she trusted, vouched for the place, and for Philip, so she had no reason to doubt. Then the man, who (in andrea’s eyes) saved her and michonne in their hour of need, shows a stronger interest in her and keeping her safe, and his undeniable charm catches her eyes (the gov was smart, he knew how to use Andrea’s vulnerability after being out for so long to his advantage, she was in over her head no doubt). People also fail to see that we as viewers know much more than the characters, and all characters don’t know the same things. So although Rick’s group might know about the Maggie/Glenn situation, Andrea didn’t and was never told straight up about it (not at the prison, or by hershel). People were extremely vague to her about his actions, they never told her in full “yeah, he was sexually harassing Maggie@, “Yeah, the Governor isn’t interested in anything other than killing your old group” Andrea was naive, not evil. She would’ve heard that and ran, which is precisely what she does after a chat with Milton, the first chat in which she’s FINALLY told the upfront truth.

I can’t really justify her essentially choosing Woodbury over Michonne cause I wish she hadn’t either, but so many characters have made un-justifiable mistakes and are still loved. And people also fail to see her moments of glory, like:

•Giving up her seat for Lori and beth without hesitation on the farm.

•Very nearly dying saving Carol’s life.

•Wanting to kill Phillip (the second time), but being stopped by Milton before she could.

•Ultimately dying trying her hardest to save / warn Rick of Phillip’s intentions towards the group and Michonne.

•Being an absolute badass when the occasion calls for it ( 2x13, 3x14 ).

•Trying to save Rick’s group, and the innocent people of Woodbury, from a war by trying to create peace.

She might’ve been a bit naive, and she made quite a few mistakes in her run, but she also made many selfless, beautiful decisions. If her peace treaty had worked, she’d be considered a hero, and it’s a damn shame people don’t look at her more positive moments on the show. I really wish they’d have scrapped her stupid, completely off-character death and continue with the character progression we saw on the farm and in her last few episodes, she deserved better than what she got.
