There are a lot of posts like this for hundreds of different shows, you could probably find a post like this for any show. But believe me when I say this show really is a masterpiece. Mr Inbetween is about a hitman living in Sydney, Australia who other than his criminal career is quite normal and has a daughter, a brother and many somewhat normal relationships which he tries to balance.
The camera work is beautiful, so many brilliant shots which feel organic and clear, you are never confused at what you are looking at and it stays consistent since it is the same director every episode. The pacing is fantastic, even though the episodes are only 20 minutes long each, they manage to fit so much story into one episode and still have a slow pacing which feels organic and constantly engaging. The action is honestly one of the best showcases of special and practical effects on TV in terms of gun scenes. The guns look and feel real, the sound effects are so loud and responsive, windows break and dust comes off walls and you can hear every crunch and crack. When people are shot you hear the bullets hit flesh and the blood looks real. The action feels so real like you are watching a real gunfight evoking a similar feeling to No Country for Old Men. it is an absolute joy to watch these action scenes. The music is dark and gritty and only used when needed and appropriate.
The characters are what truly makes the show, every character is acted so well you really believe them and see them like a real person. They all have struggles and motivations which make you care for all of them. The dialogue is so well written, so many amazing jokes and threatening gritty quotes which are extremely effective. One plot thread leads to another all while feeling like a day in the life story.
The last thing I would like to talk about is mainly for people who live in Australia. I feel as many I know do, that Australian media is heavily saturated with dogshit. We have very little representation in movies and tv shows and what we do have is inaccurate, cringe and stereotypical. This show thoroughly explores the Australian world of crime, and does so in a gritty and incredibly realistic way. The dialogue is so accurate to how Australians speak, similar to The Big Lez Show which some may be familiar with. The land of Australia is shown a lot and you really feel the strangeness and eeriness of the bush. I find most Australian media, people only like it because it is Australian or its good by Australian standards. I can confidently say that this show is far better than any Australian movie or show ever made and can stand up to some of the greatest shows ever made.
I implore you to please give this show the love it deserves.
