[SPOILERS]Why did Jon, yigrite and other 2 wildlings climb the wall? Couldn't they have just broken the tunnel/passage doors of one of the abandoned castles on the wall? Also in S3E10 how did bran and the rest get across the wall? Did they use the passage/tunnel of one of the abandoned castles?

If S3E10 bran and the rest used the passage/ tunnel on one of the abandoned castles, why weren't the abandoned tunnels sealed off with ice?

Also how did sam and gilly cross the wall? Some steps on the southern side? Why didn't Jon and his wildling team use that?
