I know it might be kind of an unpopular take, but I find it quite weird that every time Daryl mentions ''his brother'' he is actually talking about Rick instead of his real brother, Merle. It is known that Merle Dixon was not much of a good person and never was a good influence on Daryl, but in the third season, it is clearly shown that he loves his younger brother deeply. It is not a scene or two, he is always concerned about where he is and if he is still alive, even coming back to the crew he knew he could never possibly get along with just to be there by his side. Hell, in the end, he even DIED for them, died for people who hated him and that he surely was not fond of too, people who left him to die on a roof and wanted him to be as distant as possible. He died for these people just because his little brother cared for them, even with all the bad blood between him and the whole gang.
I'm not trying to reduce Rick's importance to Daryl character growth as well since he was always far more trustworthy and present than his actual brother possibly ever was, but still, I think that people massively overlook Merle's sacrifice and his whole arc as well, not just the fans of the show but it seems that the characters share this as well, and I find it quite tragic.
