[SPOILERS] Imagine Westeros if the Baratheon brothers had only just worked together.

The biggest mistake in the history of The Baratheon house was putting Robert on the throne. This isn’t to say that Robert was inherently a bad king: Kings Landing was in relatively good shape diplomatically. It was clear that Robert took the throne, but he didn’t want to rule. He’s told Ned multiple times that he loved Lyanna more than anything in the world, but can’t remember her face. The woman he overthrew a dynasty for he can’t remember her face. However, he said to Barristan Selmy when him and Jaime were telling war stories that he remembered every single face of every man that he had ever killed. How is it that you can remember every man’s face that you’ve ever killed, but not remember your life long love’s face?

Robert went on and became king and didn’t really act as king. Instead, he just whored and drank and hunted and killed. My god, he knew the crown was in “tremendous debt” but decided to throw an overtly expensive championship anyways. Robert is obsessed with killing. When he took the throne, he had to give up killing which is why he gained weight, drank, hunted and overall gave up on pretty much everything for 17 years.

Stannis was a much better choice for the throne than any of the three Baratheon brothers, but he wasn’t that good of a tactician. Let’s face it, he got his ass handed to him by the Lannisters in battle, and he even lost the battle of black water bay by being way too cocky. However, Stannis was a great politician. He had friends in many different places and knew what needed to be done. With exception of Melisandre, he had a great choice of advisors and allies and would have made a fantastic diplomat. He was fantastic at negotiating. He never made a deal with someone when he couldn’t deliver. The only reason Jon didn’t accept his offer to legitimize him was because shortly after Stannis made the offer, he was elected Lord Commander of the night’s watch. That being said, Renly was an idiot to think that he had any claim to the throne before Stannis did given the way that the monarchy/aristocracy works in Westeros. He god damned himself by refusing Stannis’ offer to be named his heir if he would just put down his banner and join him. In the words of Bron, there’s no cure for being a cunt, and that’s exactly what Renly was being.

This is not to say that Renly was a useless character because he wasn’t. He was a great spokesperson. Somehow he made an entire region of Westeros to take up arms against his own brother when they knew he had literally no claim to the throne at all. The people loved Renly. He was handsome, well respected, and showed promise as a political figure.

In summary, I think that Robert should have been made lord commander of the Kong’s guard, or made the Commander of Westeros’ armies. Stannis should have been given the Throne, and Renly should have been made the Hand of the king. Renly was just too young and inexperienced to be named a king. He was only a child when Robert’s rebellion went down. There was so much that he could have learned from Stannis and I honestly think that if the three brothers had just worked together, the Baratheons could have started a new dynasty.
