Just watched episode 1 for the first time in 3 or 4 years

Wow. Without a doubt one of the best episodes of television I have ever seen. I forgot just how good season 1 was, and how good the show used to be. Seeing the little girl turn around was absolutely chilling. And watching Rick’s face as he sees the body in the hospital for the first time, him fumbling down the dark stairwell, him wandering through the sea of covered bodies, and him seeing the decaying walker crawling on the ground... just pure, uncompromising, disturbing horror. Wow.

Then in his journey to Atlanta, his horse ride into the silent and decaying city, you can’t help but feel consumed by the mystery of all the massive buildings; what stories do they contain? Are there survivors? And what horrible things went down in the upper rooms? We’ll never know, and the sea of the unknown creates a brilliant atmosphere.

When Rick comes around the corner and meets a horde of walkers, the sheer fear as the walkers surge toward him as he attempts to flee and finally crawls into the tank is overwhelming.

It’s a shame the show slowly went down the tubes in the seasons to come, but season 1 was truly special and is something I’ll cherish forever. Thanks for reading.
