How the hell is a 40-ish year old Abraham only a Sergeant in the Army?

I never really thought about it until now but, assuming that Abraham was still a soldier by the time society and the world fell apart, how the hell is a 40 or so year old soldier only a Sergeant in the Army?

I don’t know how the Army does their promotions but AFAIK for the Marines, if you don’t make a certain rank within a number of years, you’re kicked out. Maybe the dude was in the National Guard or something since IIRC Reserves and National Guard promote a lot slower compared to active duty but it’s assumed that Abraham had years of experience. He was deployed overseas and was in a combat zone. He looks like he was a good soldier and good NCO. No way is he just a Sergeant. If anything, he should be at least a Master Sergeant or First Sergeant, not an E-5 Sergeant.
