Saturday Night Live IMDb ratings spreadsheet
I like to do these analyses for long running TV shows like The Simpsons and South Park, so with the end of season 46 I decided to honour Saturday Night Live with my (Not at all) invaluable time.
All of the ratings have been taken from the IMDb user ratings for each episode, and at the bottom an average rating for each season, and an overall average rating for the whole show. Remember, these are just user ratings and nothing to do with viewership figures.
I'd just like to say, it may look overwhelmingly dark/bad, but I'm just using the same colour scale from dark red to blue that I used for the other shows, if anyone would like to improve it with a more unique colour grading, message me and I will send you a link to the google doc for it.
So - the takeaways;
The show started solidly averaging over 7/10 for it's first 4 seasons, before a dip in form for season 5, while the dip in form was attributed to the void left by the departing Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, it was enough to make Lorne Michaels take SNL on a one year hiatus, however the NBC execs had other things in mind, and SNL continued without Lorne for 5 years, the entire cast and all but one writer walked out with Lorne, leading to an all new cast and crew from Season 6. Aside from a strong season 8 led by Eddie Murphy, their best season yet, the upward trend would not continue, and this wasn't a successful swap so after season 10 Lorne was brought back.
This was, as the ratings show, not an instant fix and SNL continued to languish around the 6/10 rating for a good few years, a better than average stretch from season 17-20 followed, thanks to the beloved cast of the early 90's like Carvey, Farley, Hartman, Myers, Nealon, Meadows, Sandler and Spade, before the show stagnated, and had it's statistically worst run of shows for the next decade.
Enter season 32, and what a majority of younger fans consider the best age for 'modern' SNL, Hader, Samberg, Sudeikis and Wiig become repertory players joining the likes of Armisen, Forte, Hammond, Kenan, Rudolph, Meyers and Poehler and SNL has a core cast that will start it's 'comeback' in user ratings, a run of seasons averaging in the high 6/10's to the low 7/10's stretching through to the current day, thanks to strong additions to the cast like Cecily Strong, Kate Mckinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kenan's 856th consecutive season.
The highest rated episode - Season 45 Episode 10 - Eddie Murphy makes his glorious return to studio 8H with the even more glorious Lizzo in tow. Bringing back favourites like Mr Robinson's neighbourhood and Gumby, it's no surprise that one of the most admired SNL cast members of all time pulled in the highest rated episode of all time.
The lowest rated episode - Season 41 Episode 4 - Trump. Obvious. Sia deserved better.
