Lf started the conflict between the Lannisters and Starks to sow chaos, but how would the conflict between those two houses help him get closer to the Iron Throne?
Assassinating Joffrey took out a vicious king and replace him with a meek one, so that makes sense. Also, he got Sansa, the key to the north, so that also makes sense. However, marrying Sansa to Ramsey Bolton makes absolutely no sense as it weakened his position and strengthened the Boltons.
Even if Lf became warden of the north or even king of the north, that doesn't bring him closer to the Iron Throne. The north, especially after Robb Stark's defeat, had no chance of taking over the seven kingdoms. Maybe Robb could have sacked King's Landing if he had married the Frey woman, but after that he stood no chance. The best the north could do is gain independence.
If Lf became warden of the north, he'd be stuck at Winterfell and unable to gain other titles and castles south.
So what was Lf's plan to get the Iron Throne? Gaining armies until he had enough? Gaining titles until he had enough to make a claim on the throne after assassinating all the Lannisters?
