[SPOILERS] Some small changes I wish could’ve been made to S7/S8

MAKE IT ONE SEASON:

Instead of having what felt like two half seasons, have one epic extended season to finish the show. This would allow both main stories (white walkers and the got) to build in the 1st half (as S7 was largely just setup for 8) and then crescendo in the 2nd half, as I feel having the story unfolding across two seasons really hurt the pacing. I also think having such a long break between S7 & 8 contributed to this wonky pacing, whereas I think it would be more natural after the S6 finale, as it felt much like more of a “we’re in the endgame now” season finale, as well as having many storyline’s that would be easy to jump back into after a long break.

CHARACTER DEATHS:

The biggest thing that hurt the final two seasons for me was that the show lost that sense of “literally anyone could die at any moment”, which if anything should be heightened in the final stages of the story. Instead, that writing felt much more “fantasy, ala Lord of the Rings. So here are the characters I wish had died to preserve that trait.

TORMUND (Ep 6, Beyond the Wall) - Tormund didn’t really have a role of any significance moving forward, and him being dragged into the lake as he’s repeatedly shanked in the stomach would have been an awesome death scene.

BRIENNE and POD (Ep 10, The Long Night) - Brienne had completed her journey in the story, which is particularly evident considering she barley appears in the final 3 eps, and I think it was a natural time to conclude her story in the big battle. I also think it’d strengthen Jamie’s arc if they hook up before the battle, and then Jamie returns to Cersei (like an addict) after losing Brienne (the one person who really saw the good in him), as opposed to choosing to reject her. Also might as well kill Pod cos I feel like if this were a real life battle, he would definitely die.

SAMWELL TARLY (Ep 10, The Long Night) - When Jon sees Sam in danger but decides to leave him to go find the Night King, Sam should have died. It would’ve added a huge amount of weight to Jon’s choice, as well as the White Walkers conflict, and it’s also logical that in this battle where a bunch of badass worries are dying, so does Sam.

GENDRY (Ep 10, The Long Night) - Again, Gendry being a legitimate Baratheon and becoming lord of Storm’s End felt very “fantasy”. I think him dying to buy Arya a little time before she climbs into the building would’ve been a cool death scene, and I also feel killing him is a stronger decision for Arya’s story, for similar reasons to Jamie. In a nice hypothetical parallel, they both lose what made them feel human, and so they both go back to what they know (killing Cersei and fucking Cersei, respectively).

EVIL THREE EYED RAVEN (TTED):

I’m sure everyone is familiar with the theory at this point, so I’m not going to beat a dead horse by going over the many hints and apparent signs of evidence. However, having TTED as the “main villain” of the series, creating all the major catalysts for his ascension to power in a centuries long master plan would be the perfect ending for a show like Game of Thrones. It would also effectively bridge the disparate white walker storyline with “the game of thrones” by turning them into TTED’s Trojan horse into the Seven Kingdoms.

That’s it, those are my two cents. Curious to hear what people think
