These days people like to praise TV Shane. But looking back, he was ultimately a coward.

I think the barn scene was the best way to encompass the difference between Rick and Shane - Rick kept trying to appease Hershel and Shane kept pushing to wipe out the barn walkers. People like Shane because they think he's the "do what needs to be done" tough guy, but he's only a tough guy when he has half a dozen Armed people backing him up.

When Sophia walked out of that barn though, Mr "do what has to be done" Shane froze solid. He hung his head and couldn't even look at her.

Rick, the one everyone thought was soft and weak in season 2? He's the one who actually stepped up and handled it.

Shane was a loudmouth brute and a coward. Rick is the one who actually does what needs to be done, every time.

Shane would have knelt to Negan and joined in if he made it that far. He'd have sold everyone out to save himself. He always took the easy path - abandon the guns and Merle. Abandon Sophia. Conquer the farm. Abandon the group.

And let's not forget Shane is also objectively a piece of shit - he almost killed Rick twice for disagreeing with him. He threatened Dale. He killed Otis. He attempted to rape Lori. He tried to murder Rick just so he could claim Rick's family as his own property.
