[MAIN SPOILERS] Breaking down the Oath of the Night's Watch

I'll divide the whole oath in parts and interpret each part to reveal its intended meaning

1st ["Night gathers, and now my watch begins".]

Simplified definition of the long winter and their Order's cause.

2nd ["It shall not end until my death".]

No further explanation here.

3rd ["I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children.]

This part sounds like sacrifice, but why? Isn't it counter productive? Maybe there's a deeper reason why.

  1. Some speculation says that this is a direct reference to what happened with the 13th Lord Commander, a legend linking him with a cold woman with bright blue eyes, seemingly a female Other. So, they implement this sacrifice in order to prevent same incident to ever happen again.

BTW this legend has its own theory.

The cold woman is not a female Other but a Ice witch or priestess. Who believes that the Others are gods and gives them sacrifices.

Ok, back to the original topic.

  1. Another speculation says that The Hero who defeated the Others sacrificed himself in the process, either he died, or turned to become the next Night's King, or turned to become a zombie like Coldhands. Which makes this part, either to honor, or to even the hero's sacrifice.

4th ["I shall wear no crowns and win no glory".]

This part suggests that the founders of the Night's watch has claims for inheritance. Maybe a King, prince or a Lord. A big hint that the "Hero" is a Stark, another speculation that interconnects to multiple theories.

5th ["I shall live and die at my post". ]

Ok, pretty obvious here. A till death do us part thingy.

6th ["I am the sword in the darkness".]

This part is tricky, either just a metaphor to describe themselves as warriors, or a hint about them being literally the Lightbringer. The sword of Azor Ahai, another interconnecting theory.

7th ["I am the watcher on the walls".]

Why walls? It seems like there is five ginormous 1,000ft tall structure named The Fort which is similar as to why the Wall is built. That is to become a barrier and to be utilize to defend against the Others(the wall) and the Demons of the Lion of Night(the fort). (maybe the same beings but that's a topic for another time)

8th ["I am the shield that guards the realms of men".]

Direct reference to the other beings besides human.

9th ["I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come".]

A statement of dedication and sacrifice for their cause to defend humanity at their lifes cost from other beings that brought the long winter and all the winters to come.

*The oath is simple but deep, and give pieces of information to visualize the events that occurred in the Long Night.

*The breakdown is a culmination of theories of other people.

PS. Please forgive my english :)
