Show and Game spoilers possibly? Why do people say they've been surviving for a while or this is what we gotta do to survive when it's only been a few weeks since it all went to shit.

For example Alicia (Fear The Walking Dead) says this is what we gotta do to survive. She makes it sound like she's been doing it forever when in reality it's only been about 20 days. I can understand someone like Javi (Telltale Games) or Clementine (Telltale Games) saying this is what they've gotta do to survive because they've been doing it for about 5 years.
