There’s no question that TV has vastly improved in quality over the last couple decades or so. This is a form of media that went from a lower grade amusement to arguably the premiere method of contemporary entertainment. That being said, there are definitely shows that, despite high praise and large budgets, aren’t quite as good as they’d have you believe. I’m really interested to find out what programs you think are overrated so please comment an answer below. In the meantime I’ll give two of mine, to see what you guys think of them (I don’t think I’ll get a lot of support for the second one lol).
House of Cards - Good show with a great cast. Kevin Spacey is a creep and certainly a bad person but he is a very skilled actor. However, I think some of the stylistic choices and overall tone of the show drag it down. It’s almost too serious, to the point of being melodramatic for me, which is a big turnoff. It feels like every character considers themselves the most important person in the room, and integral to the functioning of the United States, a particular state, or whatever it is they do. Like I said before, sometimes in its attempt to be dark, chilling, or overly serious, HoC feels to be like it crosses a line into a parody of itself, almost, or maybe a more well balanced show that it’s trying to be. It’s not a bad show by any means, but I don’t think it’s up there with the best TV has to offer, like some do.
The Office - Yikes. I know I’m going to get hate for this. Let me start by saying that I like and enjoy the office, it’s definitely a solid show and I would miss it if it didn’t exist. However, in terms of it being the pinnacle of television comedy or sitcoms, I just don’t see it. Where The Office falls short to me, is in its limited capacity for variety. I know that change isn’t really a part of most comedies on TV, but The Office always feels to me like it’s trapped within itself, like it revolves too much around a setting rather than its characters (I know, ironic since it’s called the OFFICE, but still). I feel like this prevents the characters from really growing, and this leads to a little fatigue as far as the same humor over and over again. The characters are solid, with some being really special and exceptional, but the focus of the show has always been more about the sum of the group than of the characters individually.
Anyway, I’m interested to see what other people consider overrated. Please comment below with your opinion!
Edit: Love all the comments I’m getting. Super interesting and I didn’t think I’d get this many responses!
Another Edit: A fair amount of people saying Breaking Bad. I personally love this show, and I consider it top tier, but it does suffer from some TV tropes and unrealism. Example: those two assassins/brothers who work for the cartel. Very cool but also very action movie stereotype; tough guys who never speak and carry huge, ridiculously oversized matching magnum pistols.
TL;DR: Title.
