I have read a theory about Night King and Dragons years ago and it totally made sense but the show went somewhere else.
The best thing about ASOFIAF, unlike any other series, the characters in these books have good sides and bad sides. A bad guy is not just bad because she/he wants to be bad. It is not right to say simply bad guy, for example, Jamie, pushed Bran from the towel but he felt regret, too. Also, he did these because of his family. All in all, we saw all of the characters' motivations for why they did that.
In a conclusion, I read this theory that Night King and his army are not simply just bad. Many many years ago, Night King and Dragons(Ice and Fire) were in a war. Because dragons can also be evil to humankind and nature. Night King was there to kill them. After the war ended and dragons were killed, Night King went back beyond the wall. And the reason they came back was that the dragons were born after so many years. Also, the theory said that Night King built the wall as a result of the agreement with the people. And they made a pack he will not show off until the dragons came again. That is why they are searching for Azor Ahai from the first scene of the series. They don't want to kill him they see him as a savior.
I think George R.R. Martin's intention was to create that kind of universe. Night King being simply bad does not match any part of the series. There was no pure bad or pure good in this series. Of course, D&D couldn't build that kind of story without the books. And I am so angry, George does not continue to write the series. I want to see that kind of story, I want to understand the Night King, too.
