I haven't yet managed to get to the bottom of how this happened, but somehow this turned from a pretty unremarkable and, at best, serviceable zombie flick in season 1, to one of the most well constructed, taut and original zombie shows ever in season 2. It's not really the same show anymore.
It doesn't appear they changed show runners, so the precipitous increase in quality remains something of a mystery to me. If anyone has any insights on this, I'd be v keen to know.
Interestingly, season 2 has a Pulp Fiction-esque narrative structure consisting of a series of non-linear vignettes. The pieces are put together skillfully enough not to be confusing, but instead create interest and drama.
If you're into zombie fiction, I recommend giving this a watch (on Netflix).
