I've been rewatching GoT and in the first season, 7th episode after Ned sends a messenger to Stannis--Littlefinger comes in to talk to Ned. Littlefinger says that it's best for Ned to make peace with the Lannisters, wed Sansa to Joffrey, release Tyrion from captivity, etc. Basically he wants Ned to go against Stannis.
So, why does LF say these things? It's the opposite of what he wants after all--this would basically go against his "chaos is a ladder" agenda. On the other hand, he does know Ned will never agree to this terms, so why even suggest them? I don't really understand the scene.
