Scott Gimple wants an MCU.
But he's missing the key component to make that work: Starting off small.
The Walking Dead is surely a universe that lends itself into having an extended universe spanning across different mediums. But Gimple got the idea from watching the big team-up movies (IE: Avengers) which only worked because they built it up.
So Gimple took a show that was NEVER INTENDED to even CROSS with TWD - was always intended to stand on its own, and then anally fucked the show by injecting Morgan in there like a heroin addict.
He's trying to make everything cross-contaminate each other. Have all these shows speak to each other. But that's a terrible decision.
Fear season 5 is supposed to include TWD story elements on there, as well as continuing Dwight's story. Because apparently the US only consists of 3 states in Gimple's mind - and people can just run forest run themselves into a companion series, (Which is what Fear was INTENDED to be. [Spin off takes a character from one show and put them in another, companion series is a sister show set in the same universe but rarely - if ever, interacting.]) and it just makes the United States feel so much smaller.
Yeah, I know it's possible to run into people from high school 4 states away, but the chances are unlikely. In an apocalypse, the chances of Morgan and Dwight Who shouldn't know each other are slim to none.
This new show (Still no word if its a companion or a spin-off since websites continue to use the wrong phrases. Calling shit spin-off's when they're not.) is supposed to follow 2 female protagonists as one follows a path of Gimples "All life is precious" philosophy and the other a villain. (Sounds like a remixed version of Erickson's plan for Madison to turn into a villain in Fear.) and who knows, for all, we know this show will heed the same fate Fear did, and they're going to shoehorn a character that doesn't belong in there... in there.
Gimple wants to expand this universe and I'm all for that, but it needs to be done right. Gimple is a great writer, but when he's in charge of the overall plot, and when he has a say in what happens... shit goes down-hill fast.
Gimple wants this "massive" universe to expand, but he keeps aking them cross-contaminate into one another and that's not expanding a universe. That's creating a closed loop.
Look at the MCU. Sure, they all bleed into each other. But not every MCU franchise does. Daredevil, The Punisher (lemme ask you sumthen' Rick!), Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Cloak and Dagger, The Runaways, and Agent Carter are all set in the same universe. (SMALL ENDGAME SPOILER -->) SPOILER and even then, they're all in the MCU but they rarely interact. The movies kinda only slightly sorta acknowledge the TV side, and the TV side only slightly kinda sorta acknowledges the movie. Despite all of it happening in the same universe.
Gimple sees the movies crossover but doesn't understand how much of this universe didn't crossover. He's shoehorning crossovers and shit that just doesn't fit because he wants to expand a universe by making it smaller all at the same time.
There's no way of knowing how this new companion series (Or spin-off. We have no idea.) will go, but chances are - something from Fear or TWD will bleed into it.
Here's how a good universe building chart would look like (The numbers indicating what it bleeds into.)
- The Walking Dead (1)
- Fear The Walking Dead (Retcon the fucking fuck outta 4+)
- Un-named TWD series
- Rick Grimes Movie (1)
- Comic Book set in shows universe
- Novel
- Another novel
- un-named TWD movie (2)
- Un-named TWD movie sequel (2)
- AMC premier show (2) (Continuing the story of the movie characters)
Leaving a few things to stand on their own, while some interact. But Gimple acts like he wants everything to interact.
He did say that some shows will speak to one another, but not all of them will. So here's to hoping that I'm wrong about all of this.
TL;DR: Gimple wants everything to cross breed and doesn't give anything room to grow.
Also, Look - I shit on Gimple all the time. But he's a great writer. He wrote some fantastic episodes and made some unique choices. He made the hunters far more compelling than the comics. He managed to make me miss seeing the Governor. But when he;'s in charge of the entire franchise and the storyline ahead... He makes some really dumb fucking decisions. He's a great writer... bad showrunner.
