I'm rewatching the show with a few friends who haven't seen it, and we recently finished season 2, but there were some things they were confused by, and as it's been a while since I've seen it, I didn't have answers.
So, Winterfell was held by Theon and 20 Ironborn. We hear a horn blowing incessantly, and are told that there are 500 Northmen outside the walls. (Roose Bolton mentioned sending his bastard to deal with Theon, so I assume the army is Ramsay's).
So Theon gives a speech, then the Ironborn knock him out and stab Master Luwin, saying they're gonna leave. The next thing we see, Bran, Rickon, Osha, and Hodor emerge from the crypts to find Winterfell abandoned and burnt, and Luwin tells them to flee to the Wall to be safe.
What happened to Winterfell? How did the Ironborn get out? Where did the 500 Northmen go? And if they took Winterfell, why does Bran still need to run?
